In fact, He’s given us the full armor of God, a powerful weapon for victory through His Word of God, His Spirit, and His presence.
What is Spiritual Warfare?
Spiritual warfare is the ongoing battle between good and evil, fought in the unseen realm. It’s a war for our hearts, our faith, and our obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The enemy, described as a roaring lion and the great red dragon, seeks to deceive, destroy, and derail believers through temptation, fear, doubt, and the desires of the flesh.
But we fight differently. We don’t use the weapons of the world, but the weapons of our warfare have divine power to demolish strongholds and bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).
As children of God, we are called to stand firm in the truth, to walk in the will of God, and to resist the schemes of the devil.
Scripture reminds us that God never expected us to fight the battles on our own. Only through Him can we find victory and hope for the struggle.

Examples of Spiritual Warfare in the Bible
The Bible gives us many examples of spiritual battles:
- In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, Daniel fasted and prayed for understanding, and a heavenly messenger revealed the intense warfare happening in the heavenly places (Daniel 10).
- When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He overcame the devil’s schemes using God’s Word—the sword of the Spirit (Matthew 4).
- King Jehoshaphat faced overwhelming armies, but God told him, “The battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:15, King James Version). Worship became their powerful weapon.
- In Revelation, we read of the great dragon, the ancient serpent, and the deceiver of the whole world, who is defeated by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony (Revelation 12:9–11).
What is the Armor of God?
The whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) is our spiritual defense against the schemes of the devil, and it equips us to stand firm in the midst of spiritual battle.
Each piece is essential and represents both a gift from God and a responsibility we have as believers to live in His truth.

The Belt of Truth
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth… Ephesians 6:1
God’s truth holds everything together. Just as a belt secures a soldier’s tunic, truth keeps our lives in order.
The Word of God is our source of absolute truth, and knowing the truth sets us free from deception, lies, and the lofty opinions raised against the knowledge of God.
Once we know God’s truth, we can live that truth and stand firm on it when hard times come.
The Breastplate of Righteousness
…having put on the breastplate of righteousness. Ephesians 6:1
The breastplate protects the heart—the core of our identity and desires. Through Christ Jesus, we are made righteous, not by our own works, but by faith (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Walking in righteousness guards us from guilt, shame, and the desires of the flesh that try to corrupt our hearts.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Ephesians 6:15
Our feet carry us into battle. When we are firmly grounded in the gospel of peace, we walk in the confidence and purpose of God, even on unstable ground.
This peace guards our hearts and minds and enables us to share the good thing God has done in Christ.
The Shield of Faith
…above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Ephesians 6:16
The enemy hurls lies, accusations, and fear like flaming arrows. Our shield of faith stops them.
Faith is trusting God’s promises over our feelings, circumstances, or the enemy’s voice. Like a shield, it covers us and grows stronger the more we seek His face.
The Helmet of Salvation
…And take the helmet of salvation… Ephesians 6:17
Salvation guards our minds against confusion, doubt, and despair. In the midst of spiritual attack, we remember that we belong to Jesus, the Son of God, and that nothing can separate us from His love.
This helmet reminds us of our identity, security, and hope in Christ.
The Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God)
…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
The only offensive weapon in the armor is the two-edged sword—the Word of God.
It cuts through lies and exposes the enemy’s tactics. Jesus used this sword when He rebuked the devil in the wilderness, declaring, “It is written…”
We must do the same, speaking God’s Word boldly against every spiritual attack.
Prayer (Our Constant Connection to the Commander)
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit… Ephesians 6:18
Though not a “piece” of armor, prayer is essential.
It keeps us in communication with the Lord God, our strength and Savior.
In prayer, we receive direction, comfort, and boldness to withstand the evil day and wage the good fight of the faith.

A Prayer to Put on the Armor of God
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for providing me with the full armor of God to stand against the spiritual forces of evil in this present darkness. Help me to walk in truth, wear the righteousness of Christ, and stand firm in the gospel of peace.
Strengthen my faith to extinguish every fiery dart from the enemy, and guard my mind with the helmet of salvation. Lord, teach me to wield the sword of the Spirit with boldness, trusting in the power of Your Word.
Keep me alert in prayer and fully dependent on the Holy Spirit. I know that the battle belongs to You, and through the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony, I will overcome. In the mighty name of Christ Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Final Encouragement
