Types of victory in the Bible

Victory over death

Victory in the Bible compared to the standards of the world are very different. The world tells us that in our own self, we can manifest victory and that we are enough to meet all of our needs.

Scripture reminds us that we are dead in our flesh and can do nothing on our own to pay the wages of our sin debt.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23

Yet through Jesus’ death and resurrection, death has been defeated once and for all! In Christ, His children have victory over death and the promise of an eternity with their Heavenly Father.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 is a perfect reminder of Jesus’ victory over death:

Then the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory?

O death, where is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

These two other verses also remind us that death has been defeated once and for all!

Romans 8:1-2

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Praise the Lord for defeating death and standing victorious for all eternity!

Victory over evil and the enemy

While it may feel like evil is rampant and the enemy has won, Scripture tells us how the story ends. Our mighty God will reign victorious over evil for all eternity!

Luke 10:19

Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.

Malachi 4:1

“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.”

Matthew 12:17-21 tells how victory was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:

“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,

 my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.

I will put my Spirit upon him,

    and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.

He will not quarrel or cry aloud,

    nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets;

a bruised reed he will not break,

    and a smoldering wick he will not quench,

until he brings justice to victory;

    and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

Victory over temptation

As children of God, we don’t have to live defeated or succumb to temptation. We can experience the victory over temptation in our daily lives, just as the Son of God was victorious against the ploys of the enemy.

In Matthew 4, Jesus was led into the wilderness and tempted by the devil. Jesus was able to stand victorious by knowing the Word of God and using Scripture to refute the lies of the devil.

It’s that way in our own lives. When tempted, we can experience victory by standing firm on Scripture and fleeing from temptation. We don’t have to crumble under the pressure, but can experience victory over temptation like Jesus.

James 1:13-18 shares this experience:

“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.”

Remember, in Christ you are a new creation! Your new beginning in Christ means that you are no longer a slave to sin, but have been set free by the blood of Jesus!

Therefore, each morning, put on the full armor of God, like in Ephesians 6 below, and arm yourself for the battle. The ploys of the evil one are no match for the power of God!

Victory over strongholds

While there are several different types of strongholds in the Bible, it’s often the spiritual and mental strongholds that keep us stuck.

A stronghold is an obstacle or stumbling block that keeps us from experiencing victory in Jesus.

Yet these Bible verses on victory remind us in Christ we can experience freedom from our strongholds, including:

If you’re struggling with strongholds, remember, there is victory in Jesus. Lay your struggles at the foot of the cross and turn to Jesus as your ultimate sourse of hope for moving forward!

Ephesians 6: The most powerful Bible verses on victory

You can stand firm in faith against the trappings of this world and live the victory of Christ in everyday life!

Ephesians 6 is probably the most powerful of the Bible verses on victory.

These verses outline how to move past the struggles of this life by putting on the full armor of God.

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

May these Scriptures help you rest in God’s promise of victory and be armed for the daily battles of life.
