20 Ways to Memorize Scripture When Life Is Busy

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever longed to memorize scripture, but struggle to make it a priority when life is busy? Scripture memorization is one of the most powerful ways to grow in your knowledge of the Bible and deepen your relationship with God. Yet, in the busyness of life, it can feel overwhelming to carve out time for this spiritual discipline.

Over the years, I’ve struggled a lot with memorizing scripture. I used to think I was too busy or my brain was too crowded to remember verses.

But the Lord revealed the hard truth to me that I just wasn’t making it a priority. (Ouch!)

If you struggle to memorize scripture like I do, let’s let go of the guilt and stand on God’s grace to move forward.

These simple scripture memory ideas will help us both make memorizing the Bible a cornerstone in our quiet time.

Why Scripture memorization is essential to spiritual growth

The benefits of studying the Bible are endless, and taking it a step further by memorizing scripture makes it even more impactful.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105

Memorizing scripture equips us to:

Stand firm in spiritual battles

When we face trials and temptations, having scripture stored in our hearts empowers us to combat the lies of the enemy and be steadfast in Christ.

There’s nothing more powerful than quoting scripture and praising God when we’re surrounded by struggle and strife!

Encourage others

Memorized verses equips us to share God’s truth through spirit-filled and authentic conversations. We’re able to point others to hope in God among difficult circumstances and share our faith in Jesus when someone is struggling.

Even if we don’t memorize scripture or a verse perfectly, we are able to shine the Good News of Jesus to those around us when we are familiar with His Word.

Renew our minds

Meditating on scripture transforms our thoughts, aligns our perspective with God’s truth, and leads us to spiritual growth.

When life gets busy, the discipline of scripture memorization keeps us grounded in God’s promises, guiding us through every season.

Then, when we’re struggling, we can draw from the verses we’ve memorized at any time and  place.

This will help us remember God’s goodness, faithfulness, and how He walks with us through all seasons of life.

Simple scripture memorization ideas

Below are some practical ways to incorporate scripture memorization into your daily life.

I promise, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming or a big deal!

Choose one or two ways to memorize scripture that resonate with your daily schedule and personality.

Then, make a plan to choose a verse and do the activity of your choice. It really is that simple!

Speak the verse loud as you write it

As you write the verse, speak it aloud. Hearing the words in addition to seeing and writing them strengthens your ability to remember the scripture.

Repeating the verse several times daily creates mental pathways that make it easier to recall what you learned. The former teacher in me knows this to be true!

Write the verses and highlight key words in different colors

Visual learners may benefit from color-coding scripture. Write the verse and highlight key words in different colors.

For instance, use one color for verbs and another for nouns. This visual distinction helps you recall the verse by associating it with the colors you’ve chosen.

Write the verse daily in your Bible study journal

Writing scripture repeatedly helps embed it in your memory. Dedicate a section of your Bible study journal to writing the verse you want to memorize each day.

This practice engages both your mind and your hand, reinforcing the verse through muscle memory.

That’s one of the many reasons I created the Rooted in the Gospel Bible Study Journal with a place to record a memory verse. The more we write it and see it, the more we’ll remember it.

Sing or hum a tune as you write it

Music has a remarkable way of helping you memorize. Turn your scripture verse into a simple melody or hum a tune as you write it. Singing scripture not only makes memorization fun but also ensures it stays with you for a long time.

Keep a sticky note of your verse in your Christian planner

Write your verse on a sticky note and place it in your Christian planner. Each time you open your planner to check your schedule, you’ll see the verse and have an opportunity to read and recite it.
