God is Omnipotent: Understanding Omnipotence in the Bible

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever stood in awe of God’s great power? From the creation of the world to the depth of His character revealed in the Word, God’s omnipotence is evident in all of creation and Scripture. Understanding how God is omnipotent provides us with unshakable hope, even in the midst of life’s uncertainties.

Let’s dive into what it means that God is omnipotent and explore how this truth transforms our lives.

What does ‘God is omnipotent’ mean?

The term omnipotence means unlimited power—the kind of power that belongs only to God Almighty, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

This term occurs only once in scripture, Revelation 9:6, and is otherwise referred to as ‘almighty’.

Therefore, we can define this word as ‘almighty, ruler over all’.

God alone has unlimited and infinite power, setting Him apart as the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

It means that He can do anything that aligns with His holy character and perfect will.

Nothing is too hard for Him, and no force in heaven or on earth can challenge or surpass His authority.

His power is evident in creation, His sovereign rule over history, and His ability to bring about His perfect purposes.

Trusting in God’s omnipotence gives us confidence that He is in control and able to accomplish all that He promises.

God’s omnipotence revealed in scripture

The omnipotence of God is woven throughout both the Old Testament and New Testament. Here are a few key Bible verses that highlight the Almighty Power of God:

Creation of the World

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

In Genesis 1:1, God’s omnipotence is powerfully displayed as He creates the heavens and the earth by simply speaking them into existence.

His infinite power is unmatched, for He formed the entire universe out of nothing, demonstrating His authority over all creation.

This verse reminds us that God is not only the Creator but also the Sustainer of everything, and nothing is beyond His control or ability.

Sustainer of all things

He upholds the universe by the word of His power. Hebrews 1:3.

Hebrews 1:3 reveals God’s omnipotence as the sustainer of all things because it tells how, Jesus upholds the universe by the power of His word.

This verse boasts of the incredible might of our Savior, who not only created all things but continually holds everything together with His divine authority.

This sustaining power is a constant reminder how God is sovereign and faithful. It’s the ultimate reminder how nothing in creation exists apart from His will and care.

God’s promises fulfilled

In Genesis 18:14, God’s omnipotence is declared with the question, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”

This promise to Abraham and Sarah, that they would have a son in their old age, showcases God’s unlimited power to fulfill His word, no matter how impossible it seems.

His faithfulness to keep every promise reminds us that nothing is beyond His ability. God’s  plans always come to pass in His perfect timing. (This can be tough to remember in hard seasons of life!)

Eternal power and divine nature

For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world… Romans 1:20.

This powerful verse shows us God’s incredible power and divine nature through everything He’s made.

From the stars in the sky to the smallest details of nature, His handiwork makes it clear just how powerful He is. This verse reminds us that creation itself points to God, leaving no excuse not to recognize and worship Him as the Creator of it all.

Victory over death

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.  Revelation 19:6 Through the revelation of Jesus Christ, we see His ultimate victory over sin and death, offering us the hope of eternal life.

Through Jesus’ resurrection, He proved that even death can’t stand against Him. It’s a powerful reminder that God’s strength is unmatched, and His reign lasts forever.
