The Great Homeschool Debate

It’s springtime, yet thoughts of summer fun lurk in the back of every child’s mind.  There’s just a few short weeks until school is out and the long anticipated summer vacation begins.

Meanwhile, schools are busy planning ahead for the next school year, and moms compare notes on educational preferences.

The Great Homeschool Debate

Yet lately, education has been a hot topic and friendships seem to be divided over the big controversy.

To homeschool or not to homeschool, appears to be the hottest question around.

I’ve nicknamed it the “Great Homeschool Debate.”

The battle line seems to be drawn and moms seem to strongly be in either Camp Homeschool or in Camp Traditional School.

As an educator for 15 years, I am often dragged into the debate kicking and screaming.

Having worked in both private and public education, both in a general classroom and a special education classroom, my opinion is strong on this topic, and many may be surprised by what a career in education has amounted to.

Finishing reading this post at Vibrant Homeschooling, and be sure to let her know I sent you!

  1. if i had kids, i would homeschool….and as for the Ultimate Homemaking package – i have it – i don’t know which part to start with 😀

  2. Thankfully my children are all grown but if they were little, I would NOT send them to a public institution for learning. Seems the most important topic these days for the public education system is if there should be non-gender bathrooms or not………….And all the bullying and negative stuff.. I just don’t know how parents today do it!!

    1. Wow! I hadn’t heard that about the gender bathrooms! SO scary!

  3. This is a fantastic post. There is definitely a huge debate on this one. My husband and I were both homeschooled all the way through and we loved it. But we have dear friends who are putting their children in public school this fall. You are so right…good, godly, Christian parents CAN make either decision. The question is not so much the location of a child’s schooling….the main questions are more, “How will God get the most glory?” “What are the needs of our particular family?”

  4. Hey Sarah,

I wish I’d had your website when I was raising my kids. Both are in college now.

As an elementary teacher, I had the training. But, when it comes to your own kids – what a ride!

We tried it all – public, private, home and even a combo deal.

Grateful that moms have sites like this one. Thanks for sharing with such wisdom~

    Blessings,
    Melanie

    1. Thank you, Melanie! As a teacher myself, I can only imagine how it would be to try to teach my own kids, but I know that if God calls you to it, He will see you through it, right! I appreciate your support!

  5. Both sides of the debate have valid arguments and if each side would admit their own position has its downfalls, people could get along. In my mommy group some go to a private school and some public and we can all still get along just fine!

  6. Homeschool all the way for me and my family but really, it doesn’t have to be a debate. It wouldn’t work for everyone, just like other schooling options don’t work for everyone. Thanks for sharing!

    1. What a great attitude, Tiffany! If we can all remember to offer grace and understanding to those who choose a different path than us.

  7. A great and well-balanced perspective on this hot topic, Sarah Ann! Thank you for linking up with us at Grace & Truth.
