10 Essential Topics I Pray for My Marriage Regularly

Unity

It is important for couples to be strong and rooted in faith together. Together, may we stand strong in God’s promises and be connected at the heart with biblical truths. May we strive to honor God in our relationship and family.

Heavenly Father we thank You for the gift of unity. We ask specifically for a stronger bond of unity in our marriage and that we would be drawn closer together as a couple. Help us to identify anything that would hinder us being united on all fronts (spiritually, physically, and mentally). Thank You in advance for working in our marriage. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Ephesians 4:3 – “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Communication

Communication is typically thought of as the foundation to marriage. Without fostering healthy communication habits, other aspects of marriage can be negatively affected. Invite God to be the center of your communication, to help you fight fair, and to use words that build each other up instead of tearing each other down.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of communication. We pray for wisdom in learning how to fight fair and be kind in communicating with each other. Reveal to us any words or actions that are not pleasing to You or our spouse. Help us to be comfortable with communicating any and everything we need to in order to grow closer together. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Proverbs 16:24 – “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”

Intimacy

Intimacy in marriage can be a blessing and a struggle. Pray that the Lord will help you view intimacy as an act of biblical worship and provide a nurturing environment for each spouse to flourish. May God guard your heart against impurities and place a hedge of protection over your intimate relationship. Also, may the Lord heal any past wounds and help you move forward in His name.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of intimacy. We pray that our marriage bed will be pure and a reflection of Your love. We also pray for other areas of intimacy to be enhanced, such as mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Help us to face any struggles that are keeping us from fully trusting one another. Heal us in any areas that are preventing intimacy truly being enjoyed. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Ephesians 5:31 – “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

Honesty

Marriage should be a safe place to share your heart and a place of total transparency. With this kind of honesty also comes a certain level of trust so that each spouse feels comfortable being honest in the first place. While honesty and transparency can take time to build, trust that God’s grace can conquer all missteps of the past.

Heavenly Father we thank You for the gift of honesty. We pray that we would have the boldness it takes to never lie but to always tell the truth to one another. Give us the ability to be transparent and the wisdom to work through whatever may be revealed. We thank you for conviction and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Colossians 3:9-10 – “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”

Self-control

Self-control isn’t something that we only teach children. It’s something that we must continue to walk out as adults, and especially in marriage. Spouses should always seek to be filled with self-control of the Lord, even when it’s hard. Pray the Lord will give you the strength to choose self-control in His name and to live

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of self-control. We pray for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding about having self-control in every area of our marriage. May we be mindful of things that we say and/or do that would lead to having a lack of self-control, and the willingness to fix anything revealed. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Galatians 5:22-23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Finances

Finances is an area that can be troublesome for some marriages. It takes open communication and understanding for spouses to be on the same page. God should always be honored through your finances and trusted provisionally when times are lean. Pray the Lord will give you wisdom to honor Him with your finances and give generously in His name.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of finances. Help us to always glorify You in our receiving and spending. May we always seek first Your kingdom and trust that everything we need will always be provided. Reveal any ulterior motives, greed, or mishandling of what you provide for us. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Philippians 4:19 – “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

Wisdom

Wisdom helps with gaining insight for any and every aspect of your marriage. Couples should seek the Lord’s will and wisdom in all life’s circumstances. May you regularly pray for wisdom in your relationship and that God would guide your path.

Heavenly Father we thank You for the gift of wisdom. You said that if anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask. So, we ask You for the wisdom from above. With wisdom, we also pray for knowledge and understanding so we can correctly apply it to all areas of life. May we not be wise in our own eyes, but constantly seek wisdom that comes from You. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

James 3:17 – “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”

Trust God

One of the best things couples can do is trust God wholeheartedly, even in seasons of hardship. Together may you learn to trust God for provision, strength, and guidance through the storms of life.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of trust, especially trusting in You. Help us to trust in You especially when things are happening beyond our control. May we understand the closeness that comes with trusting in You and how it is connected to trusting in one another. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Health

Remember that your bodies are the temple of the Lord and your health plays a vital role in being there for your spouse. May you pray that the Lord sustains your health and trust God in times when your health is failing.

Heavenly Father we praise You for the gift of health. We thank You for the health in our physical bodies, spiritual walks, and our marriage. Make known to us anything that would hinder us being in alignment with you. We believe that by Christ’s stripes we are healed. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Isaiah 53:4 – “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

Respect

A strong marriage is a relationship rooted in a mutual respect for each other. May you both learn to respect each other, even in anger and frustration.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of respect. Help us to have a mutual respect for one another and cherish the times we have together. Give us the strength in difficult times and convict us of any disrespectful behavior. In the same token, give us courage to put our spouse before ourselves. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Philippians 2:3 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”

Marriage always has and always will take work. Prayer is one of the single greatest works we could do on behalf of marriage, and in the end, it is totally worth it. May you be blessed and strengthened by these essential topics that I pray for my marriage regularly.
