Who is God & What Does He Have to Do with Me?

I live in the South, but I am a beach girl at heart.  Of all of my reasons to have a love affair with sandy beaches and tropical climates, the ocean itself has captured my heart. The magnetic power of the waves remind me that I am a small, finite part of this world and makes me question and search for a higher power.  In fact, it beckons me to examine who is God and question why I am here.

Who is God and what does He have to do with me?

There is only one source for truth about God, and that is His Holy Word, the Bible.

First, God is all-powerful and omnipotent.  He always was, always has been and always will be.

He is holy, pure, loving, gentle, jealous, passionate, and most of all, PERFECT. (Deuteronomy 13:4)

God lovingly created the heavens, the earth and everything in it, including people. When finished, He rested, admired His creation and stated, “It is good.” (Genesis 1:1-Genesis 2:2)

The Lord created man last and in His image. He designed all people with the free will to choose to follow Him or to go their own path. This includes the first man and woman, Adam and Eve. (Genesis 1:1-28)

Adam and Eve were placed in the most exotic paradise and were in perfect fellowship with God. They had the privilege of communicating with and experiencing the joy of fellowship with the Lord in everyday life. God walked among man and it was perfect. (Genesis 3:8)

All their needs were supplied by God, including the delicious food He created. Man had free-reign over the paradise, except for the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. (Genesis 2:16)

God warned against the fruit of that one tree, reminding the couple that the fruit of that particular tree led to death. (Genesis 2:16)

But Eve chose to eat the forbidden fruit and Adam followed her lead.(Genesis 3:6-7)

Sin entered the world.

Man’s beautiful fellowship with God was over, since the perfect God could not tolerate being in the presence of sin.  This separation between man and God became known as the fall of mankind. (Genesis 3:22-23)

Sin entered the world forever and would not stop with that first man and woman.  All people would be born with a sin nature from then on and would prohibit humans from leading the perfect life. (Romans 7:18)

As a result of the fall, there were consequences for both man and woman; the most extreme being that mankind would experience death and be eternally separated from a perfect God. (Isaiah 59:2)

Man could no longer be with God in Heaven once life on earth was over.

While God is loving and compassionate, He is also just and demands payment for sin. He will not let it go unpunished and the wage of sin is death. (Psalm 11:17)

God knew that somehow, somewhere, payment had to be made for all the sins of the world.  He loved mankind too much to let them rot in their sin as deserved.

He promised to send the Messiah to redeem all sins and right all wrongs.  The world waited, pregnant with anticipation and heavy hearts, longing to be free from the bondage of sin.

God, being faithful, knew the world needed a Savior that everyone could relate to, not a wealthy, wise king.  Instead, He sent the world’s salvation to earth through a tiny baby, born of a virgin. (Matthew 1:18-21)

That baby was God’s only son, Jesus.

He was God in the flesh, perfection in skin, sent to earth to teach us all about God’s love, and to be the ultimate sacrifice for the sin of all mankind.

Jesus roamed the earth loving, teaching, proclaiming God’s good news and lived here with complete perfection.  He was tempted when the evil one led Him into the desert, yet He never sinned.  He lived like you and me, yet He did it all without fault. (Matthew 4:1)

A perfect God demanded atonement for sin and Jesus was sent to be the ultimate sacrifice. (Hebrews 10:10)

Therefore, Jesus was wrongly sentenced to death on a cross and beaten without committing a single transgression.  He wore a cruel, spiked crown of thorns and endured the pain of nails driven through His innocent hands and feet. (Matthew 27: 11- 66)

Why would someone who was innocent consent to such a cruel death? Why didn’t God step in a save the day, releasing His precious Son from the suffering and cruelty of man?

Because of YOU.

God loves YOU with a powerful, ever-pursuing love.

He could not bear to leave YOU in your sin, destined to an eternal life in hell.

He didn’t want to be without YOU in His glorious, heavenly paradise.

He didn’t want YOU to be stranded and lost in your sin, without a way to repent and be with Him in glory.

YOU owed a debt because of your sin that you could never pay, even on your best days.

Jesus died for YOU.

God sacrificed His Son for YOU.

Jesus’ death on the cross did what no man could ever do, bridge the gap between a perfect God and the sinful human nature.

In His death on the cross, Jesus took upon himself all of the sin of mankind and the shedding of His blood made a way to reunite man with God in Heaven.

But the story doesn’t end there.  On the third day, after being in a tomb sealed and guarded, Jesus Christ rose from the dead!! (Matthew 28: 1-11)

He later ascended to Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God. (Luke 24:50-53)

That’s not just a nice story. It’s not a myth or a wives tale.  IT. IS. TRUTH!

Examine Your Heart

Take a moment and still your mind and heart.  Try to focus on the message you just read above and be 100% honest with yourself.

Has there ever been a time in your life where you have surrendered your heart and life to God?

Have you ever admitted to God that you are a sinner and in need of His cleansing?

Do you honestly believe that if you died today you would be with Jesus in heaven?  Why or why not?

If you think that being a good person or doing good deeds will bridge the gap between you and God, you are sadly mistaken. Only having a personal relationship with the Lord can save you from an eternity separated from Him in Hell.

A Call to Action

If you admitted to yourself that you don’t have a relationship with the Lord or if you are unsure if you have ever given your life to Him, there is good news for you.

The free gift of Jesus’ sacrifice and the grace that He extended long ago at the cross is still alive and well today!!!

He is calling YOU to accept the free gift of salvation and enter into a personal relationship with Him.  That free gift comes with no strings attached and is waiting to change your life.

The blood that Jesus shed still covers ALL of sins (yes, ALL sins!) and bridges the gap between you and God, once you invite Him into your life.

It’s so easy to pray for salvation and is the best decision you will ever make.  If you long to have a personal relationship with the Lord and want to see His loving face in Heaven one day, take a moment and pray this in your heart, out loud or however you feel comfortable, believing in the saving grace of Jesus.

“Dear God,

I recognize that I am a sinner and separated from you eternally because of that sin.  I know that there is nothing I could ever do to earn my way to heaven to spend eternity with you.  I believe that Jesus, your Son, died on the cross for me and with that death, He cleansed me of my sin.  I invite you today, Lord, into my life and into my heart to be my Savior.  Thank you for loving me enough not to leave me dead in sin, but for sending Jesus to suffer in my place and cleansing me of all of my wrongdoings, now and forevermore.  Guide my next steps and help me to grow closer to you. Amen!”

  1. Sorry pushed the submit button before posting a comment. This is a touching story. I struggle in my faith, because I am surrounded by atheists in my family and actually my husband is a former Christian turned atheist because he felt a loving God could not condemn his family to a life in hell so he’d rather not believe int his God. Honestly I see his point, but then again, would anyone if they were God not be jealous if man chose to hang around with evil? I am not sure I believe in the fall of man in the literal sense (I don’t take the Bible particularly literally), but I do believe that no matter how great we are, we can never be perfect.
