Maybe you’ve heard you should read God’s Word or that as a new believer, you’re to have a daily quiet time. Yet that charge can be overwhelming and daunting as a new child of God, right? Below we’ll explore the amazing benefits of reading the Bible and I’ll show you simple ways to make God’s Word the cornerstone of your life, even as a beginner.

What does Scripture say about God’s Word?

I was 15 years old when I heard the Good News of the Gospel for the first time. That cold December day, I came face to face with Jesus and He showed me my desperate need for salvation.

The reality was that I was a sinner in need of a Savior (Romans 3:23). In an instant, my whole life changed. (Not sure where you stand spiritually? Read Who is God & What Does He Have to Do With Me? for more information.)

However, I was so confused about my next steps as a new creation in Christ. While I knew I couldn’t go back to my old habits, how did I start seeking God and allow Him to change me? (If you’re wondering the same thing, check out 20 Tips for New Christians for where to start growing in faith).

When I realized the starting place for spiritual growth was reading the Bible, I laughed a bit inside.  Me, read the Bible? How? I didn’t have a clue where to begin and I didn’t understand it much.

But once I learned how beautiful and amazing the Word of God was, it became a cornerstone in my life (and it can be the same for you!)

What Scripture says about the Bible:

It always has been and always will be

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

It’s eternal and everlasting

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Mark 13:31

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8

The ultimate source of truth

Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Proverbs 30:5

It’s wisdom

The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:30

It’s perfect

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. … Psalm 19:7-12

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16

Powerful  Benefits of Reading the Bible

Does the thought of reading the Bible make you a little nervous and you wonder if it’s possible for your life? Don’t worry! God will help you understand His Words and grow you in faith. (Luke 24: 44-46) God will meet you in your imperfections- pinky promise!

God teaches you through the Scriptures

(Romans 15:4). The Bible is God’s living Word and your ultimate guide book for life. It’s one way God teaches and speaks to His children, even today.

Know God’s commands, follow them, and demonstrate our love for God through obedience

(John 14:15) As a child of God, it’s important to know God’s Word so you can live out His commands in everyday life.

Learning the Scriptures will help you teach and correct others

(2 Timothy 3:16) When you know Scripture and apply it to your life, you’re able to help others grow in faith, too. You’ll be able to lift up a fellow believer and help her stand firm on God’s Word in her own walk with God.

When you read the Bible, you delight in the Lord and in His Words

(Psalm 119:35) In God’s presence is where your soul is complete and fully satisfied. As you read the Bible, you’ll learn to savor the goodness of God and celebrate His steadfast character.

Studying Scripture helps you acquire knowledge and good judgment

(Psalm 119:66) As a child of God, it’s important to know God’s Word and how to stand firm in faith in all situations. Reading the Bible helps you know God’s Word and then be able to apply its truths to all areas of your life.

The Holy Word guides your path

(Psalm 119:105) God will guide you and His Word offers truth for how to measure decisions. As you begin studying the Bible, remember to seek the Lord for wisdom and direction. He is faithful to guide and lead His children.

Studying the Bible helps you stand firm in all seasons of life and to put on the full armor of God.

(Ephesians 6:10-20) When temptation comes your way, turn to the Word of God to help you stand firm. Scripture the “sword of the Spirit” and will anchor you to truth in times when the evil one is trying to sway you off course.

You can read the Bible and grow deep roots of faith

As many excuses as I made for not reading the Bible, I could not dispute what God says about studying Scripture.

Honestly, we simply can not grow in faith without time in the Word and without seeking the Lord. 

But the good news is, you can read God’s Word and use it as your compass on your journey through life.

As you begin reading the Bible, remember…

Open His Word, no matter how many times you’ve tried before. If you need some guidance, grab a free Bible reading to plan to guide your time in the Word.

Pray that God will give you the wisdom to clearly understand and apply His promises to your life.

Understand that reading the Bible is a process of growth and understanding. The more I study, the more questions I have and the more my spirit is hungry for time in His presence.

See that God is calling you to know the depths of His presence and experience Him anew. That renewal, that revival, begins by reading His treasured promises in His Word, the Bible.
