How to Create a War Room Prayer Strategy

While I always longed to be a powerful prayer warrior, my idea of prayer was a fleeting “help me, God” in moments of distress. Yet God opened my eyes to the beauty of a war room prayer strategy and how it was a simple plan for a prayer life beyond my imagination. Discover how it will help you foster an intimate relationship with your Heavenly Father (deeper than you thought possible, too!)

It was in a challenging season of motherhood when I cried out to the Lord in woeful desperation. My weary soul was longing to hear from the Lord in prayer.  Gingerly, I hit my knees and poured out my sorrows to my Creator.  Through my tear stained mumbles, He met me in my weakest moment. That day I emerged refreshed and with a strong conviction that I needed to incorporate a prayer strategy into my daily quiet time.

While my Bible study habits had become rock solid, I found that I rushed half-heartedly through my prayer time.  However, that day, God lovingly reminded me of my need for open communication with Him. It was time to draw the battle lines and get serious about battling for my family on my knees.

What is a war room prayer strategy?

A war room prayer strategy originates from the concept of dedicating a private space to engage in deep, focused prayer.

This strategy emphasizes disciplined, fervent prayer, often involving specific requests, spiritual warfare, and meditating on Bible verses. (The Bible study book, Fervent, by Priscilla Shirer is a fabulous resource on this topic!)

The essence lies in creating a distraction-free zone, known as a ‘prayer closet,’ where one can connect with God, away from the routine hustle.

The idea gains inspiration from the Christian movie, War Room, by the Kendrick brothers. It’s also modeled after the prayer warrior in the Bible, Hannah, who poured out her heart to God in a manner so intense that her prayers were mistaken for drunkenness.

A personal war room facilitates a similar depth of communication, allowing for unwavering focus on God’s presence. It’s a place to pray and hang visual reminders of your requests, such as a prayer wall. (Here’s a sneak peak of mine, below!)

However, whether or not you have a space you consider a war room, a war room prayer strategy can be a simple formula for daily prayer.

Having a prayer strategy can be a meaningful way to pray powerful prayers and overcome distractions in your quiet time. After all, it’s in the daily submission to the Lord where the battles of life are won.

What are the benefits of a war room prayer strategy?

Implementing a war room prayer strategy has transformed my relationship with God! This focused approach to prayer helps me cultivates a deeper sense of intimacy and communication with my Heavenly Father. I discovered the profound difference it makes in my spiritual journey, from enhanced clarity in hearing God’s voice to a stronger faith. 

Spiritual discernment

First, this strategy boosts my spiritual discernment. In a world brimming with distractions and challenges, being able to discern God’s will is essential. By using a war room prayer strategy, I’m able to take the lessons I learned in my Bible study and apply the Word of God to my life.

Implementing my own war room prayer strategy reminds me to carve out time to listen for God’s voice, not just pray for my requests. Therefore, having a dedicated time and prayer closet helps me to navigate life’s decisions because I’m more in tune to God’s plan for my life.

A consistent prayer habit

Another benefit of a war room prayer strategy is creating a powerful prayer habit. Consistency is key in any relationship, and the same holds true for my walk with God.

A war room prayer strategy ensures I commit daily time to converse with God, fostering a habit that steadily builds my faith. Plus, having a prayer plan helps me stay focused and on track, instead of battling distraction.

Standing firm in spiritual warfare

Whether or not you realize it, there’s a very real enemy on the prowl, trying to sway believers off course. We’re reminded in Ephesians 6 the power of prayer in standing firm against the ploys of the enemy.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.  Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. Yet having a focused approach to prayer strengthens my defense in spiritual warfare and helps me boldly stand firm in the name of Jesus. I’m reminded to keep pursuing the Lord and to keep the good fight of faith.

But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 1 Timothy 6:11

As a Christian woman, I’m aware that there are battles that can only be won on my knees. The war room becomes my strategic base where I wield powerful prayers and Scripture as weapons against adversary forces.

There I rejoice that the darkness has already been defeated and victory belongs to the Lord!

Be still in the presence of God

Having a war room prayer strategy helps me carve out time to be still in God’s presence. However, retreating into my prayer room, is not about isolation.

Instead it’s about creating a sacred space where I can freely pour out my heart and listen to His voice without interruption. It’s here that I experience the most profound moments of connection with God and draw strength from His perfection.

In the quiet presence of the Lord, I’m able let go of past hurts and find joy in the presence of my Savior. 

Trust God in hard times

In our world today, there seems to be trouble around every corner. Yet when I keep seeking God’s face and praying powerful war room prayers, I’m reminded of God’s faithfulness.

It’s there, in the presence of my Lord, where I reflect on God’s goodness and remember His faithfulness. Then, with the power of the Holy Spirit, I’m able to remain steadfast in God during times of struggle.

The benefits of adopting a war room prayer strategy have gone beyond what I expected. The impact on my prayer life and my overall walk with God is undeniable. (And it can do the same for you!)

Stand firm on God’s word and choose a favorite Scripture to use prayer as a powerful weapon.

Mark 11:24

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

What are the components of a prayer strategy?

When designing a strategy that works for you, remember to personalize it.  Everyone’s needs are different, however, here are a few components you will want to include.

Praise

I love to start my prayer time praising God for who He is and the mighty work He’s done in my life.  Praise Him for creating our universe, for the grace freely poured out for us at the cross, and for loving us in the muck and mire of our sin.

Other reasons to praise God include:

  • For creating you
  • The gift of your family and friends
  • How He’s blessed you
  • His protection and guidance
  • The way He’s moved in your life in the past
  • His power and might
  • That He still reigns
  • His promise to return and redeem His children

Repent, Reveal, and Refine

In this phase, examine your heart and life.  Repent and ask forgiveness for sins, and accept the grace of Jesus to wash them clean.

Then, ask God to reveal any hidden sin in your life.  While it may not be easy to come face to face with our shortcomings, recognizing our flaws is crucial.  It reminds us that only the Lord is perfect, and we, as flawed sinners, are in desperate need of our Savior.

Upon recognizing our sin, ask God to refine the areas in your character that need to be more like Him. Choose one area of growth at a time, and ask Him to make you more like Him each day.

Requests

Bringing your prayer requests before the Lord is a powerful gift.  It’s an honor to lay your burdens and the struggles of others before the feet of the Lord.

Keeping track of your prayer requests and praises allows you to look back on how He has moved and faithfully journeyed with you in the hard times.

Reflecting and Remembering

It’s a blessing to reflect on all God has done in your life.  In the hard times and struggles, when you reflect on God’s faithfulness, it will strengthen you as you remember His promises.

One way to do this is to pray Scripture back to Him. Take a verse that has deep meaning to you, and read it back to God. Praise Him for His wondrous ways and steadfast provision as you thank Him for the gift of His Word.

Worship

Recently I focused my heart on worshiping the Lord through creative outlets.  I was in awe of how worshiping the Lord can turn around a bad day and how by focusing on God, He changes my perspective on my current situations.

My favorite simple forms of worship include:

  • Bible journaling
  • Listening to worship music
  • Praising God while I clean my house (it will erase any irritation about cleaning!)
  • Teaching my children to notice God’s blessings in nature
  • Rising early to watch the sunrise and praising God for His power and might

No matter what you face or the troubles that lie ahead, a war room prayer strategy will anchor your soul to God.  Watch and seeing how a thriving prayer life will help you face the storms of life and trust God like never before.

How to get started with a daily prayer strategy

Developing a personalized war room prayer strategy can significantly transform your prayer life. Here are simple steps to help you establish your own daily prayer routine.

Step 1: Designate a prayer space. 

Find a quiet, undisturbed area in your home where you can focus on prayer during your quiet time. This space doesn’t have to be large; a small corner or closet that you can call your prayer closet will do. The goal is to have a set location that signals to your mind and spirit that it’s time to connect with God.

However, if you don’t have your own prayer closet, no worries. Simply try to find a place where you can be alone to meet with God regularly (even if it’s at the kitchen table while everyone is asleep!)

Step 2: Gather your prayer and Bible study tools.

Equip your prayer space with items that aid your prayer time. A prayer journal, Bible, Scripture prayer cards, and colored highlighters can enhance your time with God.

Consider also keeping a list of prayer requests and praises in your space to keep track of how God is moving in your life and in the lives of others. It may be helpful to make a Bible study basket, or a place to keep all your study materials that you can pick up quickly when not in use.

Step 3: Schedule a dedicated prayer time

Consistency is key in developing a powerful prayer habit. Set aside a specific time each day for your war room prayer strategy. Whether it’s early morning prayers, during lunch breaks, or before bed, find a time that works best for you and stick to it as much as life allows.

Step 4: Create your own war room strategy ‘flow’

Using the ideas above, create a simple “flow” to your prayer time. I like to write how the order of what I will pray, so I can quickly glance at if needed.

Please note, it’s crucial to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit as you pray and creating a prayer strategy is not about following certain words or a certain order. However, it’s a blessing to have an idea of a simple flow to help ward off distraction.

Step 5: Incorporate Bible verses. 

The Word of God is a powerful tool in prayer. Start by selecting a few verses that speak to your current circumstances or that the Lord leads you to pray.

These Scriptures can become the foundation of your prayers, reminding you of God’s truths and promises as you pray. (These Bible verses on perseverance and endurance are a great place to start).

Pro tip: I love using Scripture cards as a powerful way to pray God’s Word back to Him.

Step 6: Engage in strategic prayer warfare. 

Identify specific areas in your life or in the lives of those around you where you sense spiritual warfare is most intense.

Use your prayer time to combat these areas with faith-filled prayers. Speak declarations of truth, claim victories in Jesus’ name, and stand firm on God’s Word. Remember, your battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces, and prayer is your weapon.

As I pray with boldness, I love to assume a posture of humility, such as on my knees. There’s something powerful about humbling myself before the Lord in a physical way as I cry out to the Lord.

Step 7: Listen for God’s voice  

This is an area where so many believers skip! While it may feel awkward at first, get used to just listening for God at some point in your prayer time.

Cultivate an awareness of God’s presence by practicing listening prayer and mindfulness of the Holy Spirit during your prayer time. This involves quieting your heart and mind, focusing on God’s attributes, and being attentive to the guidance and whispers of the Holy Spirit.

Step 8: Reflect and adjust. 

Regularly evaluate your prayer strategy. As you grow in your prayer life, your needs and circumstances may change, necessitating adjustments to your strategy. Be flexible and open to the Holy Spirit’s leading on how to best engage in prayer.

By following these steps, you create a powerful foundation for a daily prayer habit that draws you closer to God and equips you for spiritual battles.

A war room prayer strategy isn’t just about routine; it’s about cultivating a life-changing relationship with the Father and standing victorious in His precious name!
